Award-winning journalist, filmmaker, blogger and national bestselling author Max Blumenthal will speak on "Sundown Towns and Anti-Miscegenation Crusades: The Peculiar Institutions of Israel" on Friday, April 4 at First United Methodist Church, 1838 SW Jefferson St. Blumenthal's lecture will be presented at a thought-provoking call to action, the SEEDS OFJUSTICE AND HOPE FOR PALESTINIANS AND ISRAELIS: WHAT IS REQUIRED OF US conference to be hosted by the Portland action group of Friends of Sabeel - North America. Sabeel is an international peace movement initiated by Palestinian Christians..
Blumenthal's talk will focus on themes from his recently published book Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel. The bold and controversial book is a product of four years of research on Israel-Palestine at a transitional phase. Beginning with the national elections carried out during Israel's war on Gaza in 2008-2009, which brought into power what he calls "Israel's most right-wing government to date," Blumenthal tells the story of Israel-Palestine in the wake of the collapse of the Oslo peace process.
At the Portland conference, Blumenthal will also co-lead with Chris McGreal a workshop titled Does the debate over Israel and apartheid help or hinder the pursuit of justice? McGreal is a former Jerusalem correspondent for The Guardian. He travelled and reported extensively in Africa for 15 years, including the transition from apartheid in South Africa. He covered the Egyptian and Libyan revolutions for the Guardian. He is presently working on a book about Israel and apartheid.
On Saturday of the conference, Blumenthal will join co-panelists Miko Peled and Steve Niva in a plenary on The Judaization of Palestine.
Republican Gomorrah: Inside the Movement that Shattered the Party, Blumenthal's first book released in 2009 was a best seller.
Blumenthal's articles and video documentaries have appeared in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Daily Beast, the Nation, the Guardian, The Independent Film Channel, the Huffington Post, Salon, Al Jazeera English, and many other publications.
He previously worked for Media Matters for America, a politically progressive media watchdog group dedicated to analyzing and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media.
